When we think of some of the leading philanthropists in our society, we think of Bill Gates, the Carnegie family, and of course the incomparable Oprah Winfrey. One thing that Oprah understands well is the principle, “to whom much is given, much is required.” For some, philanthropy is a mere tax write-off. However, Oprah Winfrey personifies the word philanthropy. She gives with love and joy and in abundance.

In the video clip, Oprah Winfrey was being interviewed by “CBS This Morning” anchors about her starting the OWN network. She gives great insight on business, friendship and what excites her most, philanthropy.

. . . There’s a  deeper reason for being in the world.  What everybody wants is really to fulfill the highest expression of themselves.

Contrary to popular belief, philanthropy is not reserved for those with large pockets. Philanthropy actually means goodwill to all humankind. Like Oprah Winfrey, it is easy to be a philanthropist when the cause that you are serving is something that you are passionate about. When you find something that you are passionate about it becomes apart of you. When you have obtained financial freedom and the stress of paying bills and living is taken care of, it’s easier to find your deeper reason for being.

In our current environment, we need as much goodwill to all humankind as possible. If you don’t have a specific cause that you are passionate about, then start in your local community and find something there. So you are not building schools in Africa, but you are making a difference and every little bit counts.

Make sure you watch Oprah Winfrey’s message on the video above. Follow her lead and find a cause that you want to get behind and go make it happen.
